As Singapore rapidly approaches superaged status, with one in four Singaporeans projected to be 65 years or older by 2030, ensuring the elderly age well and maintain a high quality of life becomes a critical concern. The challenges faced by the aging population extend beyond physical health, encompassing psychological, emotional, and community support. Mental wellness issues, such as depression and loneliness, pose significant threats to the well-being of older individuals, further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Additionally, financial insecurity stemming from rising care costs, inadequate retirement income, and limited earning opportunities adds to the concerns faced by many older Singaporeans.
In 2020, Singapore witnessed a significant increase in suicides, with 452 reported cases compared to 400 in 2019, marking the highest number since 2012. The suicide rate rose to 8.88 per 100,000 Singapore residents, an increase of 0.88 from the previous year. These statistics highlight the pressing issue of mental health and well-being in Singapore.
There are number of activities we have planned to help the elderlies staying in old homages.
Assistance with daily needs: With the help of your donation and support, we shall be distributing groceries and daily needs to the elderly homage. We shall plan for such events on a periodic basis.
Counseling and Emotional Support: Volunteers will spend time with the elderly residents, engaging in conversations, listening to their stories, and providing companionship. This helps alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation often experienced by the elderly.
Recreational and Social Activities: We shall organize recreational activities such as games, arts and crafts, music therapy, and group exercises. These activities promote social interaction, cognitive stimulation, and physical well-being among the elderly.
